Trekking to the craters of Etna

The cost of the excursion is € 50 per group (plus cable car cost of € 30), excursions will be guaranteed upon reaching a minimum of 6 participants and confirmed in the day according to weather/vulcanological conditions;
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Excursions are subject to provisions by the civil authorities, so the maximum achievable quota may change. The maximum altitude currently achievable is 2750 m. above sea level, close to the crater of the last volcanic activities.
Meeting point: Hexagonal Bar, Piazzale Funivia, near the Rifugio Sapienza.
Gathering: 10:00 am, delivery of equipment, bureaucratic requirements, latest information from the volcanological bulletin of the INV of Catania and delivery of tickets, meeting with the vulcanological guide or alpine guide.
Our excursion to the summit craters of Etna, the tallest volcano in Europe, begins.
The departure time may be subject to changes caused by the forecasts of the vulcanological bulletins and civil protection. Any changes will be communicated in the morning by our guides.
Departure: 10:30 am From the meeting point then we will take the new Etna cable car, thus reaching 2500 m.s.l.. Here will begin our trek that will allow us to cross our lunar landscape, consisting of the recent lava flows emitted during the winter and spring 2021, to reach the area of the small explosive cone of the eruption of 1971, disappeared under the lava of 2021, then from here the trek to the main crater of the Etna Volcano will begin.
From here we will have the opportunity to admire the extraordinary spectacle that the highest volcano in Europe offers us, snooping inside the bowels of the central crater. Then we will continue on a crater terrace to admire the Bocca Nuova crater, the Southeast Crater and the Northeast Crater. From this point, if the weather conditions allow it, we will have the opportunity to observe Calabria, the Aeolian Islands, the mountains and the interior of Sicily and therefore the entire eastern Sicilian coast.
We will descend along the side of the crater to skirt the still smoky flows of 2021, then we will cross the same to reach the lava flow channel of October 2002, then we will go to browse the fumaroles of the effusive crater of October 2002. So we will still cross magical lunar landscapes, to overlook the Belvedere of the Bove Valley alongside the lava of 2021. Extraordinary caldera belonging to the ancient eruptive centres.
So along the imposing eruptive cone of the ‘Laghetto’ Crater we will reach the Cable Car terminal which will comfortably lead us to the starting point. It will be a journey between geology, vulcanology, admiring the active craters of Bocca nuova, Voragine, craters of the North East and that of the South East.
The excursion to the summit craters of Etna, given its demanding character is indicated to people accustomed to demanding routes is not recommended, categorically, to the sick and untrained people. The minimum recommended age is 8 years.
